The impact of non-governmental politics of Human Rights
Last lesson we spent some time considering the ways in which states can act multilaterally and bilaterally as part of the international human rights regime. In small groups of 3-4 students you should create a table that shows the pros and cons of each approach with a view to deciding whether, in your opinion, multilateral or bilateral diplomacy is the most effective. It is is important that you support your reasoning with real world examples (use the answers to last lesson's activity as a starting point if necessary). Be prepared to share the results of your discussion with the whole class.
We will now discuss the the role played by non-state actors in the international politics of human rights. Specifically, we will focus on the role played by non-commercial non-government organizations (NGOs).

Now you need to return to your original groups and repeat the original activity but this time you should include INGOs. If forced to choose - and remember, we know the world is rarely as simple and clear cut as this - which do you think is the most effective strategy for the monitoring and implementation of a global human rights regime?
