This syllabus point is asking us to build on (and demonstrate) knowledge that we have from previous lessons. It is asking us to prove our understanding of the following:
Conflicts are not always violent
- Conflicts are not static - they are dynamic (changing type and parties) as time goes on
- They have a range of causes - (e.g. greed vs grievance debate for intra-state armed conflict) - that may change as (b) changes (e.g. structural realism may explain why a conflict is subsequently internationalised, as might liberal conceptions of R2P)
- Most conflicts are intra-state and all conflicts start without direct violence (they may evolve into this), although the presence of structural violence may be the cause of the conflict from at least one parties point of view.
